A Regatta we keep coming back to

We are DEN 11, and we truly enjoy coming back to Mövenstein. There is something special about the atmosphere here: friendly, social and welcoming on shore, while the competition on the water is always hard-fought. And with experienced race officials making every effort to get the best possible racing, it is a combination that keeps bringing us back.

The Mövenstein Summer Regatta brings together several classes – Formula 18, A-Cat, Musto Skiff and 14-footer – creating a lively mix both on and off the water.

Day 1 – Waiting for the Wind

Day 1 started almost windless, with hopes that the breeze would finally gather later in the afternoon. While the race committee spent the day out on the starting vessel, patiently searching for wind on our behalf, they kept us updated from shore roughly every hour. With the AP flying on shore, we could relax, enjoy the social atmosphere and wait.

Finally, around 15:00, we were sent out. The wind was light and very shifty, both in strength and direction. To make sure we could still get several races – and make it back for the joint BBQ dinner – the courses were kept short. Very short! Just two laps, with races finished in less than 25 minutes.

The tricky conditions made for plenty of changing positions. Yet GER 26, Jesse and Sven Lindstädt, managed to master the shifts and dominated the day with three wins from four races.

Day 2 – More Wind, More Racing

Day 2 brought an early start, with the first race at 10:00 and the final race needing to start before 14:30. Thankfully, the wind had increased to a more respectable 6–12 knots – although the occasional mysterious windless patch was still waiting to catch us out.

The racing was tough and the positions kept changing, with a lot depending on making the most of every shift and gust while avoiding those disappearing patches of breeze. Sharing the course with the other classes added another layer of challenge – and, occasionally, a little frustration – but ultimately it is great fun to have so many boats racing together.

The eagerness on the starting line, combined with the port advantage, even gave us two general recalls – which we decided to regard as some valuable extra start training!

We managed three races, now with three laps and a much longer course. Around 45 minutes per race gave us proper F18 racing – roughly twice the racing time of Day 1 and a very satisfying way to finish the regatta.

Two Tricky Days – One Great Regatta

Two tricky but great days of sailing. A huge thank you to the race committee and race office for doing such a great job of finding the best possible racing and making it as fair as possible in some challenging conditions.

And then there is the shore experience. The friendly, closely knit club atmosphere really makes Mövenstein special. Volunteers keep everyone going with coffee and delicious cakes every day, topped off with a fantastic joint BBQ dinner on Saturday.

We always love coming to Mövenstein for a regatta – and this Summer Regatta has definitely ensured that DEN 11 will be back!
